User Research of XBox Game Assassins Creed - Microsoft Game Studios

I had an opportunity to work on a usability test for Microsoft User Research Studios, we tested “Assassin's Creed IV” Xbox game. Observed learnability for Xbox One novice users. Created interaction maps, affinity diagrams, and worked with their internal software at their labs. Conducted cognitive walkthrough, prepared a study kit, moderated user research sessions with participating users, and prepared presentations and final report for Microsoft. In the end, developed a new Co-Play gaming research method as part of this project. Which was presented at E3 game conference in LA.

The Method

Co-Play Method
2 People = 1 Novice + 1 Experienced
1 Hour Study
Only novice holds the controller
Post sequence interviews [ACIV]
Post game interview
Additional focus placed on pre-identified pitfall & strategic learning areas [ACIV]

What We Saw

1. ‘Fun’ for whom?
2. Linear gameplay limitations
3. Sequel audience mindset
4. Advice can be imperfect

Who We Tested

Experienced - 18+
At least 5 hours per week gaming, 25+ hours on the game
Novice - 18+
Familiar with the controller, Less than 1 hour per week gaming, No experience with the genre or game

Why We Did This Study?

“Stop Tutorials!”  What about game tutorials is a hindrance vs. a help?
